Proto-Italic
editEtymology
editFrom Proto-Indo-European *péth₂r̥ ~ pth₂én- (“feather, wing”), from *peth₂- (“to fly”). The oblique stem of the original noun was extended with ā-stem endings; compare Proto-Germanic *feþrō (“feather”), which was similarly extended, but from the nominative stem.
The original PIE nominative stem is preserved in Latin accipiter from *aku-peter (literally “sharp wing, keen wing”).
