Etymology edit

Named in 1978 by Professor Jack Feldman of UCLA, after a variety of white wine served at a scientific meeting in Hirschhorn, Germany.

  1. (anatomy) A group of neurons located in the rostral ventrolateral medulla and ventral respiratory column in mammals. It plays an important role in controlling breathing and responding to hypoxia.
