Baiern
German edit
Proper noun edit
Baiern n (proper noun, genitive Baierns or (optionally with an article) Baiern)
- (historical) the territory and chiefdom of the Bavarian tribe, chiefly before the creation of the Holy Roman Empire
- (linguistics) the area where Bavarian dialects are spoken (comprising only part of modern Bavaria, but most of Austria and South Tyrol)
- Obsolete form of Bayern (“the state of Bavaria in later times”).
Usage notes edit
- The above distinction between Bayern and Baiern is usually maintained in historic and linguistic scientific literature; otherwise only the ay-spelling is usual today. And, Baiern was the original "Bayern" and Bayern was used in 1825.
