German edit

Proper noun edit

Baiern n (proper noun, genitive Baierns or (optionally with an article) Baiern)

  1. (historical) the territory and chiefdom of the Bavarian tribe, chiefly before the creation of the Holy Roman Empire
  2. (linguistics) the area where Bavarian dialects are spoken (comprising only part of modern Bavaria, but most of Austria and South Tyrol)
  3. Obsolete form of Bayern (the state of Bavaria in later times).

Usage notes edit

  • The above distinction between Bayern and Baiern is usually maintained in historic and linguistic scientific literature; otherwise only the ay-spelling is usual today. And, Baiern was the original "Bayern" and Bayern was used in 1825.
