Etymology

From a substrate language, from a Celtic hydronym *Barvantia, "boiling", from Proto-Indo-European *bʰr̥u̯n̥ti̯ah₂, from *bʰerw- (“to boil”). Compare Galician fervenza (“cascade, waterfall”), which could be a Romance calque of a pre-Latin noun.
