editFirst attested as opter buyeckulen in 1463. Compound of a first element that was at some point reinterpreted as beuk (“beech, Fagus sylvatica”) and Middle Dutch kule (“hole, pit”). No relationship with the toponymic element beukel (“small round elevation in the landscape”).
