Boxmeer
Dutch edit
Alternative forms edit
- Bóksmér (dialect spelling)
Etymology edit
First attested as mere in 1271. Compound of the surname Buch and meer (“lake”), used here in the rarer sense of "cut-off bend of a river". The interpretation of the second element as Middle Dutch meer (“marker, boundary marker”) is less likely.
