Etymology edit

Sino-Vietnamese word from 勤王 (to devote to the king), from Literary Chinese 勤王 (qínwáng), a word dated back to pre-Qin-Shi-Huang times, hence "king" rather than "emperor". Compare Japanese 勤皇 (kinnō, devotion to the emperor) and Japanese 勤王 (kinnō, devotion to the king).
