First attested as duuelant and duuinlant in 1206. Compound of a first element that has been variously interpreted as Middle Dutch Duve (a personal name), Middle Dutch *duve (hill) and beduven (to cover in water, to dip in water) and land (land). Compare Duiven, Duivendijke, Duivendrecht and Duivenvoorde.
