Etymology

edit

From Middle High German erweiz, from Old High German arawīz, from Proto-West Germanic *arwīt. The form with -ts- (and -z in standard Ripuarian spelling), which is also found in bordering dialects of Low Franconian, may due to a compromise between shifted and unshifted forms.
