- (Drenthe) First attested as in villa echtene in 1181. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from Old Saxon êht (“property acquired through marriage”) or from Middle Dutch echten (“ban, proscribe”). A derivation from Proto-Germanic *aik-iþja- (“oak forest”) is also in the realm of possibility. Compare Achlum.
- (Friesland) First attested as acthne in 1245. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from Proto-Germanic *aik-iþja- (“oak forest”) or from a personal name *Akatinos. Compare Achlum.
