Etymology

edit

First attested as in villis esethe in 1309. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from an ancient hydronym, derived in turn from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ- (move). An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Proto-Germanic *aiganą (to possess). Compare Eexta.

See also Dutch Low Saxon Iekst.
