editFirst attested as in elpe in 1362. Likely derived from an ancient hydronym, which may derive in turn from a compound of a term cognate to Gothic aljan (“diligence, zeal”) and Proto-Germanic *apa (“current, watercourse”). Compare Aalden, Eelde and Elpe.
