Etymology edit
First attested as edygwerum in 1447. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian Ede (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and wier (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The Dutch version of the toponym is derived from an older form of the Frisian name.
