First attested as eigelsowen around 1170-1180. Compound derived from either Old Dutch Aigil (“a personal name”) or Middle Dutch eygel (“needle-shaped sepulchral monument”) and the dative plural form of Old Dutch owe (“land next to a current”). Compare Igel.
