Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as ganderon in the late 11th century. Derived from an ancient hydronym. The hydronym has cognates in a large area of Western Europe and may be derived from Proto-Germanic *gandu (opening, gap). An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Pre-Indo-European *gand- "gravel". Compare Genderbeemd and Genderdal.
