Etymology

First attested as wigarathorpe in 1240. Calque of West Frisian Gerkeskleaster, a compound of Gerke (“a personal name”) and kleaster (“monastery”), a reference to a former Cistercian monastery founded by landowner Gerke Harkema. Originally a compound of Old Frisian Wigar (“a personal name”) and thorp (“farmstead, subsidiary settlement”).
