Etymology edit

First attested as den goede in die linde in 1329. Derived from groot (great, big) and a toponym potentially derived from a hydronym (derived in turn from Proto-Germanic *linþja- (flow slowly, flow softly)) or, alternatively, from a term cognate to Old High German lentî (landing).
