First attested as den goede in die linde in 1329. Derived from groot (“great, big”) and a toponym potentially derived from a hydronym (derived in turn from Proto-Germanic *linþja- (“flow slowly, flow softly”)) or, alternatively, from a term cognate to Old High German lentî (“landing”).
