Gwy
Welsh
editEtymology
editUnknown; first attested as Old Welsh Guoy. The element -wy is found in other river names such as Monnow, Medway, and Conwy. A borrowing from a Pre-Celtic substrate language cannot be ruled out, as gwy does not match any obvious nouns in Welsh.[1]
Pronunciation
edit- (North Wales) IPA(key): /ɡuːɨ̯/
- (South Wales) IPA(key): /ɡʊi̯/
