Etymology edit
Semi-learned borrowing from Old Norse Hǿnir, of uncertain origin. Possibly from Proto-Germanic *hauhnijaz (“high one”), or Proto-Germanic *huhnijaz (“white one”) (cf. Greek κύκνος (kýknos, “swan”)). Cognate with Icelandic Hænir and Swedish Höne.
