Etymology edit

Semi-learned borrowing from Old Norse Hǿnir, of uncertain origin. Possibly from Proto-Germanic *hauhnijaz (high one), or Proto-Germanic *huhnijaz (white one) (cf. Greek κύκνος (kýknos, swan)). Cognate with Icelandic Hænir and Swedish Höne.
