Etymology edit

First attested as hoin and hoyn in 1155. Likely derived from hoog (“high, elevated”) or an allied term. A derivation from Hugen (“name of a Germanic people”) (cf. Humsterland and Hommerts) is less likely. Formerly an independent village.
