I-novel (countable and uncountable, plural I-novels)

  1. A type of autofictional Japanese literary genre; a novel written in that genre.
    • 1983, Irena Powell, Writers and Society in Modern Japan, Springer, →ISBN, page 55:
Dazai's novels are largely fiction written in the I-novel spirit. What this means is that although the events described in the novels did not necessarily take place in Dazai's life, the novels as a whole essentially reflect the reality of his life and his feelings at the time, and as such they were accepted by critics and readers alike as confessional I-novels.
