EtymologyEdit

From Arabic جَمَاهِيرِيَّة (jamāhīriyya, [state] of the masses), which derives from جُمْهُورِيَّة (jumhūriyya, republic) by changing the first element, جُمْهُور (jumhūr, public), to its plural form, جَمَاهِير (jamāhīr, the masses).
