Etymology edit
Attested as Katham in 1665. Compound of the element kat (“cat, lesser, arched ridge, mud”) and Middle Dutch hamme (“alluvial land in the bend of a watercourse”). The first element may actually be a variant of kade (“quay, embankment”). Compare Kathoek.
