First attested as apud renum catwijch in 1224. Derived from the toponym Katwijk, aan (“on”) and the hydronym Rijn. Katwijk is a compound of the difficult to interpret element Middle Dutch kat (“cat, mud, ridge, lesser, low-quality”) and wyc (“village, settlement”). aan den Rijn was added to distinguish the settlement from Katwijk aan Zee.
