From Middle High German kiz, kitze, from Old High German kizzī, kizzīn, from Proto-Germanic *kittīną (goatling, kid), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gidʰ- (kid, goatling, little goat). Cognate with Low German kitte, English chit. Related also to English kid, Danish kid, Swedish kid.
