Adapted from Swedish Kvevlax (also written Koiffuolax (1440), Kåjwålax (1443), Quiffuelax (1543) in older sources), which in turn is from Finnish *Koivulaksi (thus koivu (“birch”) + lahti (“bay”)) or *Kuivalaksi (thus kuiva (“dry”) + lahti (“bay”)).[1]
