Etymology

First attested as neder-mierde in the 15th century. Derived from laag (“low, lower”) and Old Dutch *mier (“swamp”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi. The element laag was added to distinguish the settlement from Hooge Mierde. Compare Melle and Mierlo.
