Etymology

Binomial compound of Lampropeltis f (kingsnake, milk snake) +‎ New Latin elapsoīdēs m or f (elapsoid, similar to Elaps-genus snakes), literally elapsoid kingsnake/milk snake. The species is named as such due to its visual similarity to coral snakes, many formerly placed in the genus Elaps.
