Etymology edit

First attested as lirdob and lindor in 1155. Etymology unknown. The toponym has been hypothesised to be a compound of either linde (linden, Tilia sp.) or Proto-Germanic *hlitha (slope, incline) and dorp (village), but these hypotheses do not match with the oldest attestations of the toponym. Compare Lerop.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈliː.rɔp/
  • Hyphenation: Lie‧rop

Proper noun edit

Lierop n

  1. A village and former municipality of Someren, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.
    Synonym: Kaauwvoetenland (Carnival nickname)
