Latin

Etymology

edit

Probably from a zero-grade extension *li-ro- of Proto-Indo-European *(s)lei- (slime, slimy, sticky) (see also English slime (noun)). DNGI instead suggests a derivation from a pre-Roman hydronym *liri- (muddy water).[1]
