Etymology edit

First attested as machera in 1107. Potentially a compound of Old Dutch *mak (fitting, well-positioned) and the dative plural form of haar (sandy ridge). An alternative hypothesis posits a connection with Vulgar Latin maceria (rubble, ruins). Compare Machern.
