Etymology edit
First attested as berses in 1207. Compound of middel (“middle, mid-”) and a Germanic term cognate to or directly derived from Latin bersa (“enclosed hunting grounds”). The element middel was added to distinguish the settlement from Oostelbeers and Westelbeers. Compare Bears, Beers, Beersdonk, Beerze and Besselaar.
