The name of the municipality is derived from the names of the English toponym Mulgrave and the Northern Irish toponym Derry. The toponym Mulgrave is included as a reference to one of the titles of John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby (1648 - 1721). The toponym Derry is included as a reference to the city and county in Northern Ireland.
