editCanes is thought to be a corruption of Cannock. An early recorded form was Norton-sur-le-Canok.[1] The parish of Norton under Cannock was recorded in the 19th century, when it was incorporated into Brownhills District.[2] Another source records Norton under Cannock as another name for Norton Canes in the 19th century.[3] Brownhills was taken into West Midlands in 1974, whereas Norton Canes remains in Staffordshire.
