Oud-Diemen
Dutch
editEtymology
editFirst attested as demen in 1226. Compound of oud (“old”) and the toponym Diemen. Potentially derived from an ancient hydronym derived from Proto-Indo-European *amb- (“water”) or from a term meaning "dark, darkness". The element oud was added when the nearby hamlet of Diemerbrug appropriated the name Diemen.
