Etymology edit

Attested as 't Schilt in 1618. Compound of oud (old) and an unclear element. The second element may derive from West Frisian skil (small seashell) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t or, alternatively, be cognate to the hydronym Schelde. The element oud was added to distinguish the settlement from Nieuweschild. Compare Schouwen.

  • IPA(key): /ˈɑu̯.dəˌsxɪlt/
  • Hyphenation: Ou‧de‧schild
