Etymology
editFirst attested as in uilla podarwic around 850. Likely a compound derived from Old Dutch podero (“calf, foal”) and ooi (“land next to water”). Proposed derivations of the first element from Old Dutch Bodhari (“a personal name”) or a term signifying "mud" or "sediment" are less likely. The older element wijk (“settlement, village”) was eventually replaced by ooi. Compare Peursum, Poeijers, Sterksel, Vaarle, Vaarsel, Varsen, Varssel, Varsselder, Varsseveld, Ten Vorsel and Bolsele.
