EtymologyEdit

Either from pohjan ((of) north, archaic) +‎ maa in the sense of "land of the north", or adapted from Swedish Österbotten, "eastern bottom" (pohja (bottom)), by analogy with Västerbotten, with botten originally in the sense of "bay, gulf", referring to the Gulf of Bothnia.
