Etymology

Both Turner and Mayrhofer posit a connection to Sanskrit पाषाण (pāṣāṇa, “stone”) and पाषी (pāṣī, “stone”), both of which underwent a pan-Indo-Aryan s > h shift which is irregular outside of Northwest Indo-Aryan and Sinhalese. If this is true, then this word is from *पाष (pāṣa, “stone”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-). Compare Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀸𑀡 (pāhāṇa), 𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀡 (pāhaṇa, “stone”).
