Latin edit

Pronunciation edit

Verb edit

*coactitāre (Proto-Gallo-Romance)

  1. Alternative form of *coacticāre (to press) (cf. *volvitāre~*volvicāre)

Reconstruction notes edit

The initial /kw-/ is suggested by the absence, in northern Occitan, of any variant showing palatalization of /k/, as well as parallelism with the northern outcomes of *coacticāre. The absence of /w/ from Gascon, as opposed to its survival in for instance /ˈkwate/ < Latin quattuor, would likely be due to its being found in a pretonic syllable (cf. /kaˈtɔrze/ < quattuordecim).

An original */-kt-/ (> */jt/) would be expected to yield */t͡ʃ/ in various regions, but collision with the following */t/ may have depalatalized it.

Descendants edit

  • Gascon: catar
  • Occitan: catar
