From Proto-Celtic *bremeti, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrem- (“to cry”), itself possibly of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate with Latin fremō (“to murmur, mutter”), Middle Persian [script needed] (brām- /⁠bl'm-⁠/, “to cry, weep”).
