Etymology

Of unclear origin. Jones tentatively connects the term to Sanskrit जल (jala, “water”), itself perhaps related to गलति (galati, “to drip”) and German quellen (“to well up”). This is semantically appealing; however, Proto-Brythonic *g should yield a *ǵʰ in Proto-Indo-European, while the suggested cognates yield a *gʷ.
