Nominal derivative of *kanti (together with), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱm̥-ti-, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóm (next to, with, along). Cognate with Proto-Italic *komitis (going together) (compare Latin comitia (people's assembly), comitium (election place)).
