From *slēxs- +‎ *-antī (body part suffix), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pléygʰ-s-, from *(s)pleygʰ- (to go, move) (compare Sanskrit: प्लेहते (plehate)). Cognate with Ancient Greek πλιχάς (plikhás, space between thighs), πλίσσομαι (plíssomai, to cross the legs).[1]
