From Proto-Indo-European *wáy. Compare Latin vae, Lithuanian vaĩ, vái, Proto-Germanic *wai, Russian увы́ (uvý, alas), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬫𐬋𐬌 (vayōi), Sanskrit उवे (uvé), Persian وای (vây).
