Proposed to be an old borrowing from Proto-Germanic *slēdaz or *slēdiz, reflected in Old High German slāt (Modern German Schlot (chimney)); however, this is uncertain, as no other Germanic cognates of this word are known.

*leeci

  1. hearth, stove
