Likely from Pre-Germanic *terh₂(h₃)kʷ-, a compound of Proto-Indo-European *terh₂- (to cross) + *h₃ekʷ- (to see). For the latter component, compare Sanskrit नीच (nīca, below, down) (< *nih₃kʷeh₁).[1]
