Etymology

From earlier *mawejō, a causative derivation from Proto-Indo-European *m(y)ewh₁- (to move). The root vowel -o- was taken from the aorist stem *mowa-,[1] which would have come from the e-grade and thus not subject to Thurneysen-Havet's law for o-grade forms.
