Etymology edit

The second mora must have been a contraction of *asa (morning). The alternative reconstruction also proposes monopthongization of *ki (to come) + *asa (morning).

A semantic shift 'a while ago' had also occurred in the Niigata and Nagasaki (/kesu/) dialects of Japanese.
