Reconstruction:Proto-Ryukyuan/ikari
Proto-Ryukyuan
editEtymology
editFrom Proto-Japonic *ikari (“anchor”).
Pronunciation
edit- Tone class: A
Noun
edit*ikari
Reconstruction notes
editThe Yonaguni term for "anchor" is アンカ (anka), from Japanese アンカー (ankā) and ultimately from English anchor, also appearing in Ishigaki Yaeyama アンカー (ankā). Miyako (except for Ikema) lost its reflex of *ikari for some reason, probably due to borrowings from English. The Kunigami (Nakijin-Yonamine) form is irregular; †hichai or similar would have been expected, and thus, it might be a loanword.
